Welcome K1 Maspalomas

Colegio-Privado-Internacional-Britanico-Ingles-Las_Palmas-Maspalomas-English-School-welcomek1maspalomasDear K1 Parents: I firmly believe the first years at school are very important, setting a solid foundation for your child's future.

We are delighted that you have chosen Canterbury School for your child and we are confident that they will thrive here.

Each member of staff is here to nurture, support and guide them each and every day and are committed to making your child's first school experience productive, stimulating and fun!

There will be many changes for them to cope with when they start school such as:
• Becoming familiar with a new environment.
• Having to share their teacher with their classmates.
• Meeting and recognising new adults,as well as many new children.
• Coping with new experiences and routines and getting used to a longer, more tiring day.

Social and personal skills are most important at this age. Encouraging your child to listen carefully when
you talk to them and to carry out simple instructions will assist them greatly in the classroom. We will be encouraging the children to develop their independence skills such as being able to put things in/ take them out of their own school bag and to put on/take off their shoes and jacket themselves. It is a good idea for your child to practise these things at home too!

Miss Lucy will be your child's new teacher. The school days starts at 8.30 and finishes at 15.30. Miss Lucy will be on the small playground from 8.15 every morning to greet the children and again when you collect them at the end of the day. There will also be another teacher on duty on the large patio from 8.00am and the back patio under the canopy until 16.00 hrs should you need them.

The children should bring a schoolbag each day containing , a healthy snack, a bottle of water, a sunhat, a bib for the dining room and a small sheet and pillow case to sleep on at rest time. They also need a change of clothes and a pack of baby wipes in case they have an accident! Everything must be clearly marked with their full name and class. (uniform, shoes, pants, individual socks!) It is very easy for things to go missing during the first week so please check our lost property box if you do lose anything and of course tell us!

During the day your child will learn to speak English by : singing songs, listening to stories, watching video clips, playing interactive games and participating in art and craft activities. They will learn many new skills and vocabulary very quickly so please ask them to tell you about their day!

Please feel free to ask Miss Lucy any questions regarding the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum and the daily routine. We are very much a family school and aim to work in partnership with you directly. Starting school can sometimes be quite daunting, first and foremost we want your child to be happy!

Looking forward to meeting you very soon,

Paula Hill
