Tournament

Our boys of 95 enjoyed a great tournament where many well known teams took part. Unfortunately the team was not at its best as several players had missed quite a few training sessions due to injuries and sickness and added to this Enrique Sanchez twisted his ankle in the first match (Gran Canaria) and Sebas González hurt his in the second (FC Barcelona). Consequently we were handicapped from the outset and did not perform as well as we should have. Our lads were enthusiastic but technique was lacking in attack on some occasions and in defence on others.

Outstanding play from our boys infantile team in the XVIth ’ Internacional Ciudad de Santa Cruz’ (Tenerife) Tournament which took place from the 20th to the 23rd December 2009.

The 2009-2010, basketball season has begun with an interesting opening Tournament which has served as a great introduction to the larger size court and a size 6 basketball for all the lads concerned: it’s all going to be a very different from last season!

Great opening tournament to the 2009-2010 session which has given our boys' Minibasket team a taste off what there is to come...

• Final: CANTERBURY – SANTA CRUZ (56-59)
The Final was played at 3.30 in the afternoon. Both teams were neck and neck throughout the whole match. First one then the other was ahead on the scoreboard until at the end of the first quarter the LIONS were leading by 5 points. It was noticeable at times that this was the final match in a long tournament and the defence play was not as good as in the earlier matches. Canterbury attacks also lost some drive and energy, the game became erratic and too many easy shots were missed. The second half carried en in much the same fashion until CANTERBURY were 10 points ahead at the end of the 3rd quarter. SANTA CRUZ en the other hand benefitted from their superior physical strength, kept up strong counter attacks and had more success with the rebounds. This, added to the easy shots that CANTERBURY missed soon meant that their opponents crept up little by little until they finally got ahead. In the last minute and a half, CANTERBURY lost three attacks with shots under the net and lost the game 56-59
We should learn from this defeat which left us disappointed, but at the same time we can be satisfied with the general high level of the CANTERBURY team throughout the whole tournament.
We should mention that our Canterbury Lion Eduardo Perez was nominated the best individual player in the Tournament.

Sunday 5th October : CANTERBURY – VIRGEN DEL MAR (semi-final) y CANTERBURY – NURYANA (3º - 4º puesto)
La sem- final at 09.00 o’clock in the morning was our worst match and the team suddenly went to pieces. It was a question of wanting and not being able to from the beginning to the end. We were finally beaten by 26 points in a match which was deemed to be a game against a similar rival. This meant a play off for the 3rd or 4th position.
Both times were fairly equal at the beginning and the scoreboard showed first one then the other ahead, The fact that all the players had played five matches in three days began to show and the tiredness crept in at odd moments. However the Lions played a good second half with some great moves and the final score was Canterbury – Nuryana (61-48)
The tournament was won by Santo Domingo in a tough match between the two finalists: Santo Domingo - Virgen del Mar (55-47)
